DNA

Until recently, studies of paternity by “DNA analysis” were the subject of fiction. Its high cost and scarcity of specialized laboratories restricted the use of DNA testing to situations of extreme need, as police cases, or medical research. For legal and family issues, commissioning a biological analysis of paternity was extremely costly in time and money.

Determination of paternity

DNA tests to determine paternity is made by comparing the DNA sequence of the parent, child and mother. The combination of the DNA sequences of the father and mother should result in the sequence of the boy / girl, only this way will have a security, usually over 99%, over the paternity of the child.

Determination of motherhood

In some cases is to determine what is the maternal genetic line, in this case is used mitochondrial DNA transmitted to the child's mother / daughter and that in turn is transmitted by them to their descendants.

Curiosities:

Is it possible to do a paternity test without the presence of the biological mother?
Yes, this test requires additional testing, ensuring an accuracy similar to that performed in the presence of the mother.
Is it possible to do a paternity test before birth of the child?
Yes, it is from week 12 of pregnancy through an analysis of CVS called, and after 16 weeks of pregnancy is also possible to do in amniotic fluid through amniocentesis. The taking of these samples is performed in specialized medical office under ultrasound control constant, and can be complemented by chromosome analysis or other genetic analyzes.
Can you do a paternity test to a deceased person?
Paternity testing can be done even if there are people involved in establishing paternity allowing died many years after death.

Is it the same blood sample or saliva sample?
Yes, it is exactly the same, the source of a sample for DNA does not affect the paternity test.
